
Sugarloaf Mountain
Sugarloaf Mountain is a mountain in Rio de Janeiro. The mountain reaches 395 meters (1,296 feet) in height. It is located between Rio and the Atlantic Ocean in the west side entrance of Guanabara Bay. Right behind the mountain is Urca Hill which is 220 meters (772 feet) tall. Sugarloaf is made of granite monolith and was formed over 600 years ago through tectonic activity and erosion. You can find native plants, birds, and small mammals on the mountain. Common marmosets can be found there too. Some birds you can find on Sugarloaf Mountain are the Brazilian tanager, the great horned owl, and the red-shouldered hawk. The climate around there resembles the climate of Miami, Florida. It was ranked 25th as a famous peak that is not a major mountain. In Portuguese, Sugarloaf Mountain is called Pão de Açúcar which means sugarloaf. Sugarloaf Mountain was named because of its resemblance to conical molds of refined sugar. Sugarloaf Mountain is a tall mountain that brings many people to the country of Brazil.
